Research is a process of inquiry. It starts with a question whose answer could be acquired through a chosen approach and designed methods perceived as suitable. It is becoming increasingly accepted within public health that qualitative research methods have a contribution to make to understanding the complexity of human behavior and the interaction between disease and society. There is, however, less understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin qualitative research, and consequently of its appropriate application. This module, which addresses these issues, and focus on the development of research skills in relation to data analysis, discussion of the brief review of the general methodological principles that inform qualitative research. The module will cover basic terms used in qualitative research, principles, and characteristics of qualitive research methods.
